چکیده

Stable isotopes (!13C and !15N) were used to examine the origin of organic matter for the most representative demersal species of the SW Icelandic Wshery, accounting for over 70% of landings of those species in the North Atlantic. Samples were collected during a 2-week period in early September 2004 from landings and directly during Wshing cruises. Stable isotopes showed that particulate organic matter and sedimentary organic matter were at the base of the food web and appeared to Wll two diVerent compartments: the pelagic and the benthic. The pelagic realm was composed of only capelin and sandeel; krill and redWsh occupied an intermediate position between pelagic and benthic realms; while anglerWsh, haddock, cod and ling resulted as the true demersal species while tusk, rays and plaice were strongly linked to the benthic habitat.

Impact of Atlantic salmon cage culture on sediment chemistry in Mjoifjordur, Iceland

Impact of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) cage culture in Mjoifjordur, Eastern Iceland on the chemistry of the sediment was investigated. Sediment samples were collected using a Shipek grab in December 2003. A core sub-sample was taken from each grab for analyzing total organic matter, total organic carbon, total nitrogen and phosphorus in different depths from three stations at various distances...

Distribution, Population Biology, and Trophic Ecology of the Deepwater Demersal Fish Halosauropsis macrochir (Pisces: Halosauridae) on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Halosauropsis macrochir ranked amongst the most abundant and widespread demersal fishes on the mid-Atlantic Ridge of the North Atlantic (Iceland-Azores) with greatest abundance at 1700-3500 m. All sizes, ranging from 10-76 cm total length, occurred in the area without any apparent spatial pattern or depth trend. Using otolith sections displaying growth increments assumed to represent annuli, th...

Predation by jellyfish on large and emergent zooplankton: implications for benthic–pelagic coupling

Stable carbon isotopes were used to determine the contribution of emergent demersal zooplankton to the diet of the scyphozoan jellyfish, Catostylus mosaicus, at Smiths Lake, New South Wales, Australia. A preliminary study in 2004 indicated that there was no difference in the δC of ectodermal tissue and mesoglea of the medusae. In 2005, medusae and zooplankton present during the day and night we...
